Schoolyard as a base for learning


Description of training content

The course is coordinated and arranged by Kinda Education Centre.

Learning Outcome
Know how to work with the schoolyard as a classroom and teaching media and how to work with experience-based learning and sensory awareness as a support for learning in school.

Knowledge about the theoretic basis of outdoor educational pedagogy, research and literature.

To develop personal and social skills through outdoor activities and lessons and to understand the health benefit gained by taking learning into the outdoors.

To have understanding of outdoor learning in formal and non-formal education in Europe. Knowledge about outdoor pedagogy in a cross-cultural perspective.

To develop a personal activity plan: How to put new knowledge into action back home and how to support the school or organizational development in the field of outdoor learning.

Methodology
The main methods will be through practical training, cooperative work, various activities, workshops, study visits, individual and group reflections as well as discussions. The content is thematic and interdisciplinary and based on ”learning by doing” combined with “reflection
upon action”. Through experiencing by heart, hand and head meet the three key parts of Outdoor Education (Personal and social development, Outdoor activities and Environmental education). Positive atmosphere, exchange and fun are a part of the learning process during the week. The course will take place mainly outdoors close to nature, in the rural as well as the urban landscape.

Before the course – Preparation
Contribute to the international social evening, with something representing your country/region.

Answer to the request to set your professional goal for the training, to be communicated with the participants and course leaders.

Prepare a presentation (use the templet which will be sent to you) about your workplace /school, and if applicable the experience of teaching outside the classroom.

Bring an ichnography (a drawing or map) and photos of your schoolyard on paper to use during the week.

After the course – Follow-up
Course evaluation at the end of the course, and given as feedback to the participants. After the course, participants will be asked to reflect on what happened when they returned home and how the course influenced their teaching and school/workplace. This will be shared by Information and communications technology (ICT)

The course provider support after the course activities, eg. Professional exchange in the field.

Training, help to find partners for future school projects and job shadowing as well as contact with universities for Outdoor Education.

Duration – Time Period
We arrange pick up service in Linköping at 17.00 Sunday. The course starts at 18.00 Sunday and end 16.00 at Friday. There are no possibilities to arrange earlier departure. Please add time for travelling.

Training Activities – Schedule
General
The programme has an experiential approach, to learn by experience, to reflect upon it and to be creative.

Everyday we will reflect up on
What we have done, what was the purpose and how can we use this back home/professionally. How can we adapt it to our proffession, schools- and learning conditions in Europe.

Day by Day
Day 1, Sunday: Pick up service in Linköping and arrival at course venue in Rimforsa. Get to know each other and the place. Introduction and expectations for the week using outdoor methods.

Day 2, Monday: Games as a tool for ice-breakers. Moving in the landscape and taking part in learning workshops on the way. Workshops on how to teach different school subjects outdoors, learning by doing and reflecting upon the action. European social evening.

Day 3, Tuesday: Visits to pre-school and elementary school in Kisa, lunch at pre-school. Workshops and discussions on how to use your own schoolyard as a base for learning using your photos and ichnography. Outdoor education theory. Canoe trip on lake Åsunden. In the evening, professional exchange by participants.

Day 4, Wednesday: Visit Swedish primary school in Rimforsa, children and teachers in education out-of-doors. Lunch at school. Workshops and ideas for learning different subjects in your own schoolyard using your photos and ichnography. Outdoor education theory. Risk management.

Day 5, Thursday: Philosophy and theory of Outdoor Environmental Education and the impact on the health issue. Sharing ideas and workshop on individual action plan for managing change and impact based on the training. In the evening by the outdoor fire.

Day 6, Friday : Visit to pre-school in Linköping. Retrospect of the week and evaluation of the course. Closing ceremony and receiving of certificates.

The programme might change due to circumstances.

Who is the course for?
For teachers at pre-school, pre-primary, primary, secondary
and special education, teaching children up to twelve years.

Place and costs
The course is in the south of Sweden, in Kinda Municipality
close to the city Linköping. Nearest airport is Linköping City Airport.

Course fee: 700 Euro

Cost for food and accommodation: 620 Euro. (accommodation and food will be arranged by the organizer).
